APPLICATION:
The on-line application will be pre-screened to determine the applicant’s eligibility. Eligible applicants will be given a testing date that will consist of a written test in the morning and physical fitness test in the afternoon. Applicants who are successful in passing both tests will be given an extensive background application to be completed and turned in on a date to be determined.
WRITTEN TEST:
The New Castle City Police Department uses the National Police Officer Selection Test (POST) to determine the applicant’s eligibility. The police department purchases the POST test from Standard and Associates, Inc. The test is administered by a member of the command staff in the community room located at the New Castle City Police Department. Applicants are required to get a score of 70% to pass. PHYSICAL AGILITY:
The fitness test will be administered after the written test at a location to be determined. The purpose of this test is to determine if the applicant meets the minimum requirements to attend the New Castle County Police Department Training Academy. Applicants are strongly urged to prepare for this test. Applicants will be required to complete 26 sit-ups, 16 push-ups in one minute and 1.5 mile run 15:37.
ORAL BOARD:
Applicants who passed the written and physical tests will be scheduled for an oral interview. The interview panel will consist of the Administrative Captain, a patrol supervisor and a patrol officer. The purpose of this interview is to measure the applicant’s suitability for police work and for this department. There are any number of platforms that can prepare a candidate for this part of the process. Applicants are strongly encouraged to access these training platforms in preparation for their interview. Applicants who fail to prepare will be quickly identified.
BACKGROUND
As mentioned earlier, applicants who pass the written and physical portion of the process will receive an extensive background application and will be given a date to have it turned in to the police department. Applicants who are successful in the written, physical and oral phases of the process will then be sent to background. One of the agency’s detectives will be assigned and will contact the applicant. This process will include but is not limited to an extensive look into the applicant’s education, employment history, military service, financial history, drug use, criminal and traffic history. The investigator will be conducting interviews with family, friends, neighbors, employers, etc.
CHIEF’s INTERVIEW
Applicants who are successful in all phases of this process will be ranked and scheduled for an interview with the Chief of Police. Once the decision to hire is made, successful applicants will be given a conditional hire.
CONDITIONAL HIRE
Applicants will be offered a position with the department pending the results of medical and psychological examinations.
MEDICAL EXAM:
Applicants that accept a conditional hire are required to pass a comprehensive medical examination that includes a drug screen.
PSYCHOLOGICAL:
Applicants that accept a conditional hire are required to pass a comprehensive psychological examination.
ACADEMY
Applicants who are hired will be required to attend the New Castle County Police Training Academy and successfully complete a 30-week extensive and intensive training course.
