CIU

The Criminal Investigative Unit is comprised of two full time detectives that report directly to the Administrative Captain. The detectives are responsible for investigating all serious felonies or cases that require significant follow up.  Detectives are typically selected from patrol after displaying exceptional skills in report writing, knowledge of criminal law, exceptional interview / people skills and a solid work ethic.  Once selected detectives are required to receive additional training geared specifically towards their roles.  Some of the typical training topics are in major case management, crime scene/evidence processing, crime scene management, fraud/identity theft investigations.  Our investigators are required to attend at least one annual homicide conference hosted by the Delaware State Police, one annual gang and drug conference, and specialized training dealing with crimes against children.  CIU is available 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week / 365 days a year by rotating on-call responsibilities.

Seasonal Program

For many years the New Castle City Police Department has implemented a Seasonal Officer Program, employing anywhere from two to four officers that patrol on bicycles.  They are typically in service from May to October and are present at all city events during that time frame.

Many of our seasonal officers find the experience to be extremely rewarding and go on to full-time careers in law enforcement.  Seasonal officers experience the identical hiring process as full-time officers, making them even more marketable for full time positions.  Seasonal Officers receive 48 hours of training as outlined by the Council on Police Training with an additional sixteen hours of bike training from a Police Mountain Bike Training (PMBT) instructor.

Commend an Officer

Any positive input is evidence of our commitment to serve the residents, businesses, and visitors of New Castle City. It can also become an invaluable tool to remind officers of the impact encounters with police can have. Commendations will be shared with the officer and their supervisors. They will be placed in the officers personnel file and tracked for our annual report.

Citizens who wish to commend an officer for any reason are encouraged to click on the link below and share your experience.  Any positive input is evidence of our commitment to serve.  You can also mail your experience to;
